When they sing the song of Betalevel (if we may flatter ourselves to imagine that we shall inspire a ditty or two), surely there will be a verse about Swap Meet. What started as a humble piracy event*, with a dash of karaoke in the corner, has grown into… a humble karaoke event, with the distant memory of piracy. It was our fifth event ever and, if our currently penciled-in busy schedule for our final week holds, will be in roughly the inverse same position at our end — which makes it, by a good measure, our longest-running and most-regular event over the years.

What has remained through it all is a belief that pop culture is a kind of folk culture. And that folk culture “belongs” to the people. Inasmuch as ownership is necessary at all, it should be there primarily to protect the small from the large, and not the corporations from individuals.

And so we sing: Of joy in the face ever-eroding freedoms! Of troubled pasts and hopeful futures! Of big butts we cannot lie!

Won’t you join us one last time?
