When your father invites a handsome foreigner into your house to learn Indian classical music, are you not supposed to fall in love with the handsome foreigner? We’re just saying: he’s handsome. And foreign. And a musician.
But, no, your father has already promised your hand to another. And so you dutifully comply, as does the handsome foreign musician, despite his rugged good looks and his devil-may-care attitude towards life and the fact that he’s a musician. It’s about respect.
And, yet, your betrothed eventually learns that he is not the object of your affections, that you have a yen for something more foreign, more musical. Heated words are exchanged and a song-and-dance number or two are performed. Naturally. Nonetheless, he’s a stand up guy and is not going to get in the way of true love.
So what do you do then? What do you do?
It’s a story that is playing itself out now in small towns across America. And, in India, they made a movie out of it, starring Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan.
