This Sunday, The Wasp and Orchid martial arts choreography seminar will be screening Iron Monkey (Siunin Wong Fei-hung tsi titmalau) by renowned action director and choreographer Yuen Wo Ping. Considered by many fans to be the epitome of the genre, Iron Monkey offers more people and objects flying through the air, smashing into the surroundings and/or utilised as weapons than any other martial arts film ever made.

A uniquely Chinese variation on the Robin Hood story, the Iron Monkey (played by Yu Rong Guang) is a masked bandit who robs the riches from corrupt officials to distribute the wealth to his poverty-stricken village. When travelling doctor/kung fu master Wong Kei-Ying’s (Donnie Yen!) son, young Wong Fei-hung (the legendary subject of many movies, but especially Tsui Hark’s infamous “Once Upon a Time In China” series, to be screened in the future), becomes endangered, the two are pitted against one another before teaming up against a notoriously evil rebel shaolin monk for a final acrobatic battle in a sea of fire atop flaming poles!

Preceding the feature screening, there will be short selections, and a brief bio/lecture by d. g. eng on the overwhelming significance of Yuen Wo Ping himself. His fight choreography is most readily recognized in the States from movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix Series, Charlie’s Angels and, most recently, Kung Fu Hustle and — currently in theaters — Unleashed, starring Jet Li.

Injected with a Poisson (1995)
Directed by Sean Deyoe
Starring Seth John and Eleanor Pardini
Featuring music by Praga Khan

When Jonathan Ellis did a martial arts demonstration set to the tune of the techno classic ‘Injected with a Poison’ at his high school talent show, little did he know what evil forces he would unleash into the world. Inspired by that talentful display as well as a friend’s obsession with the movie Iron Monkey, director Sean Deyoe made his first kung fu short film, Injected with a Poisson. It is the story of an anonymous rogue warrior (Seth John) who answers the call to rescue the daughter of a government official (Eleanor Pardini) who’s been kidnapped by unknown forces. As he sets out on his journey, he quickly discovers that not everything is as it seems. And given that it is a _short_ film, he also quickly reaches the end of the movie.
