The serpents, or what I had then thought of as ser- pents, had disappeared. But in the dead embers of the fire, now cold and black, was a shining metal plate. I picked it up and saw that it was also carved, as the stone, but very intricatly, after a fasion I could not understand. It did not bear the same markings as the stone, but I had the feeling I coukd almost read the characters, but could not, as though I once knew the tongue but had since long forgotten." />

“We push towards a textural ensemble of sounds, a homogenous music where each sound has a place, and yet blends together with the rest to form a whole. We try to make unidentifiable sounds that have as little connotation as possible. We want each sound object to be as ‘free’ as our dialogs, constructions and sequences of them.”

A lot of you may have witnessed members of the Hermetic Order of Betalevel presenting any number of various spectacles: guiding a paranoid bike ride, hosting robot farm animal races, shouting drunkenly at the screen during “Leprechaun 4: In Space,” or leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of “The Age of Aquarius.”

But did you know that we’re musicians as well?

Yes, that’s right. When we’re not working hard to bring you some of the most idiosyncratic events in LA, we also play music. Saturday night there will be short sets from:

Jason Brown as Zotalayer
Sean Deyoe as Traditional
Colin Dickey as Martini Sheen
David Eng as Last Nights of Paris
Amar Ravva as ▼IN&#9650

and featuring our host for the evening, Heather Parlato, as HERSELF!

So come on down and check out our sounds. We promise nothing less than utter astonishment.

Look, we gotta be honest with you. We aren’t really sure what is going to happen here. We do know it’s going to be a performance involving sound and light. And also darkness. There might be robotics? We’re not sure. But we are definitely looking forward to it.

Omar put together a performance last year called “translating bodies into wormholes
(ripe with access points)”. And a couple years ago, he was part of a performance with endless contortionist and televega called “Architecture in the Dark”. This one might be like those, but different.

We asked Omar for a description. He said: “if a video can stand in place of a text description, then…”

The RESONANCE music series is a forum for musicians, listeners and scholars to share, discuss, and collaborate on singular ideas in sound. Alongside lectures and audio installations, the series will focus on providing a showcase for experimental projects and offer an opportunity for composers to develop conceptual pieces or works-in-progress within a live, intimate setting. By bringing together diverse artists exploring various frontiers—from improvisational classical ensembles and avant-garde vocal virtuosos to unique instrument artisans and machine-manipulating noise technicians—RESONANCE encourages a deterritorialization among these practices, in pursuit of possible openings onto something otherwise, unintended and new.

Improvisational Electronic Music Extravaganza!
Monday September 6
8:30PM
Free

Swiss electronic musicians Norbert Möslang, Jason Kahn, and Gunter Müller join local artists Mark Trayle, Scott Cazan, and Casey Anderson for a rare night of genre-defying improvisation.

Möslang, Kahn, and Müller, playing together as MKM, wield a sound palette that hovers between the harsh rhythmic noise of Norbert Möslang’s cracked everyday electronics and the rich sonorities of Günter Müller’s percussion-based samples and electronics. Jason Kahn’s work on analog synthesizer bridges both worlds, adding high frequency interference and processed piezo microphone and short wave radio input to the trio. MKM’s set is sure to be a sight to see, a rare opportunity to revel in three of electronic music’s most distinctive voices.

Scott Cazan kicks things off with a solo set of feedback and digital electronics.

Up next is an improvised duo between Casey Anderson (laptop, radio, amplified metal) and Jason Kahn (analog synthesizer, piezo microphone, and short wave radio), improvising together for the first time.

After MKM’s set, Mark Trayle and Anderson join MKM for a large ensemble conclusion- not to be missed!

Greg Davis: Born in 1975, Greg Davis grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He studied classical & jazz guitar and composition at DePaul University in Chicago where he received his bachelor’s degree in music in 1999. In 1997, he started his own independent record label, Autumn Records, to release his own music and the music of others. Davis moved to Boston to pursue a master’s degree in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music which he completed in 2001. During this time, he also immersed himself in an independent study of computer based electronic music and became an active live performer. February 2002 saw the release of Davis’ debut album Arbor on Carpark Records of New York City. This marked the beginnings of his career as a professional musician. He has collaborated with a wide range of musicians including Zach Wallace, Joe Grimm, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Jeph Jerman, Tim Barnes, Sebastien Roux, Steven Hess, Chris Weisman, Akron/Family, Megafaun, Ben Vida and many more. Davis is well known for his blend of acoustic instruments with computer / electronic sounds. He continues to explore the possibilities of sound using new technologies and a wide array of instruments from around the world.

AURES: Aures is a microtonal music group, from Portland, OR. The group consists of John Krausbauer (violin), Thomas Thorson (violin) and Taryn Tomasello (accordion). Aures play amplified acoustic instruments utilizing tuning systems derived directly from the harmonic series, to achieve their aims.
Their compositional-improvisations produce dense and dynamic fields of harmonic interference and reinforcement which are unavailable to conventionally even-tempered Western music. The effect is in equal parts both foreign and familiar, searching for a deep consonance amid a flux of microtonal variations, beating tones, difference tones, and psychoacoustic phenomena. Long durations of the music allows the listener to adapt the ear to these unusual sounds, placing the listener into an interactive sound-field where alternative harmonies begin to emerge.

OK Music: is a Los Angeles based band, made up by Yvette Holzwarth (voice/violin), Dan Corral (drums, synth), and Ryan Tanaka (keyboard). The group evokes moods and narratives through “themed” improvisations, using simple ideas and concepts as its departure point for musical inspiration. “OK” is a colloquial English word denoting approval, assent, or acknowledgment. Performances include elements of audience participation, where the listener may be able to suggest themes for the band to use as part of their improvisations.
http://musicisok.wordpress.com

Zotalayer: [Ssssssss!] Luthor: What are you doing! Superman: Melting your infernal machine into a puddle with my heat vision! Luthor: HAHAHA! But it’s too late, you caped fool! The damage has already been done! Superman: What was it, Luthor? The ionosphere? The ozone layer? Luthor: No no no no. It was something not even you have heard of, Superman. The ZOTA layer! But you’ll never see it for yourself. My machine has destroyed it. Superman: You! Deluded! Maniac! Luthor: But don’t be alarmed. No one on Earth will be harmed, at least not directly. The only person who was protected by the zota layer was YOU! Superman: You’ve got exactly three seconds to start making sense. Luthor: There’s a peculiar type of radiation out there that not even you are immune to, Superman. It effects your mind whenever you relax or go to sleep. Turns you into a wild man and makes you go absolutely berserk! Superman: Great Scott! The destruction tonight in Metroplolis… Luthor: That’s right, old foe, it was you! And with the zota layer gone, you can bet it will be happening a lot more often. [Punch!] Luthor: Ooof! [Woosh!]
layer.zota.org

Sublamp: Los Angeles based artist Ryan Connor uses a synesthetic blend of audio and video textures to explore pre-language emotional experience, an anti-symbolic direct sensory experience influenced by the closed-eye vision work of Stan Brakhage.
