The Signal Archive is the ‘Rosetta Stone’ of the immaterial residues of our everyday devices.

This ongoing archive defines the backbone of our techno culture. May it be discovered one day and utilized as historical reference, research, or affection development with electronic devices. This event will include 13 screenings from the Archive and the Archiving Station for visitors to have their device recorded.

The archive frames the development and history of Morse Code as a point of reference. A point in time when our modes of communication were at the early stages of mediation. The electrical telegraph, the mediator of the time, was a device to communicate the spoken word through a codified system of dots and dashes. The electrical telegraph and its intrinsic physical properties and technology, coupled with this codified system, quickly transformed into a sound object as it became evident that listening to the device was just as effective than reading the dots and dashes. This compelled the research and collection of the intrinsic sonic qualities of our contemporary communication devices: the mobile device.

Now in its third year, The Experimental Music Yearbook is a repository for composers, performers, and the public to glean the methods and styles of various artists working in the experimental music tradition. As the modes of experimentation in the arts change from year to year, the Experimental Music Yearbook’s annual issues will build into a comprehensive, and varied, database of experimentation in music/sound. An annual festival will accompany the online portion of the Experimental Music Yearbook.

Joseph Clayton Mills and Adam Sonderberg are 2/3 of the Chicago-based trio Haptic (w/ Steven Hess), a texture-centric performing and recording entity that combines a rigorous attention to sonic detail with restless experimentalism.

For tonight’s performance they are joined by LA-based composer and violist Catherine Lamb. The trio will create a long-form electro-acoustic work utilizing multi-output diffusion.

The evening will commence with a solo work, performed by Lamb, for viola and oscillators.

NOTE:
This event will include Multi-Output Diffusion! Symptoms may include: standing brainwaves, drone temples, trance face, or dreamboat foot. Please use Multi-Output Diffusion responsibly.

A lot of you may have witnessed members of the Hermetic Order of Betalevel presenting any number of various spectacles: guiding a paranoid bike ride, hosting robot farm animal races, shouting drunkenly at the screen during “Leprechaun 4: In Space,” or leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of “The Age of Aquarius.”

Look, we gotta be honest with you. We aren’t really sure what is going to happen here. We do know it’s going to be a performance involving sound and light. And also darkness. There might be robotics? We’re not sure. But we are definitely looking forward to it.

Omar put together a performance last year called “translating bodies into wormholes
(ripe with access points)”. And a couple years ago, he was part of a performance with endless contortionist and televega called “Architecture in the Dark”. This one might be like those, but different.

We asked Omar for a description. He said: “if a video can stand in place of a text description, then…”
