In an age of musical pluralism, it would seem that song contests should be an anachronism. And yet Idol, The Voice, and other similar franchises remain amongst the top-rated television programs internationally. On the twentieth anniversary of the EU, one might think that European nationalism had died down a bit. But, you know, what's twenty years compared to hundreds of years of history? And there was a while there when the Eurodisco sound was decidedly outré, having taken a backseat first to the guitar-based approach of grunge and then the global ascendancy of hip hop. More and more, however, the blueprint for the "EDM" on the pop charts was drawn up in studios in Italy or Belgium, circa 1983.

And so, with all this being the case, one might conclude that the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual event celebrating competition, national pride, and above all else the undying beat of disco, would feel strangely relevant again. And maybe, in a way, it does. And yet it still feels cheesy. Very, very cheesy. (In the end, its earnestness is probably what does it in. You just can’t get away with outfits like that anymore _if you mean it_.) And we say CELEBRATE THE CHEESE!

How, precisely, do we recommend celebrating the cheese?

Wrapping up our month long series featuring films with a female lead, Wasp & Orchid has saved the best for last with 2008′s Chocolate.

Best known for their Muay Thai action movies Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong starring Tony Jaa, director Prachya Pinkaew and martial arts choreographer Panna Rittikrai cast 24 year old Taekwondo expert Yanin “Jeeja” Vismitananda in her debut performance.

Jeeja plays Zen, a young autistic girl who acquires astounding combat skills by observing the students training at a neighboring Muay Thai academy in addition to various action films and video games. When her mother–the former wife of a Yakuza boss and moneylender to the criminal underworld–falls ill and cannot afford treatment, Zen decides to take it upon herself to collect from old debtors, who aren’t going to pay up without a fight.

If you are familiar with Prachya Pinkaew and Panna Rittikrai’s work then you already know the fight sequences are going to be extremely complex and non-stop, over-the-top.

The Wasp & Orchid film series is extremely excited to present one of our favorite action heroines Michelle Yeoh, starring in a film that is definitely in our top ten, all time favorite martial arts movies: Yuen Wo Ping’s Wing Chun.

Born in Malaysia, Michelle Yeoh began training in ballet at four years old. After a spinal injury prevented her from pursuing ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance in London she went on to win the Miss Malaysia beauty pagaent in 1983 at the age of 21.

Participating in several action films during throughout the 80’s she eventually took a hiatus from acting but had a huge comeback in 1992 opposite Jackie Chan in Stanley Tong’s Supercop. Like Jackie Chan she has become famous for performing her own stunts, sustaining several injuries over her career (check out Michelle jumping a motorbike onto a moving train: http://youtu.be/hTv7HXqqqXA). She first became more widely recognized to American audiences as a Bond girl in the movie Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and earned international acclaim for her role as Yu Shu Lien in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Directed by world-renowned martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo Ping, Wing Chun also features action superstar Donnie Yen as well as the actress Cheng Pei Pei (whose film Come Drink With Me kicked off this female fighter series). The movie features plenty of Yuen Wo Ping’s gravity-defying acrobatics and characteristic slapstick combat. Wing Chun is a genre classic not to be missed!

Like many martial arts actors and actresses of her time Angela Mao was trained in Bejing opera before landing her first leading role at the age of 17 for the film The Angry River (1971). The director, Feng Huang, would continue to cast Angela Mao in several movies throughout the early 70’s such as Tie zhang xuan feng tui (Deep Thrust), Hei lu (Deadly China Doll), and perhaps most notably, alongside of Sammo Hung, in the film Hapkido: films for which she would earn the nicknames “Lady Whirlwind,” “Lady Kung Fu,” and “Mistress of the Death Blow.” She first became known internationally for her brief and tragic role as Bruce Lee’s sister in Enter The Dragon (1973), for which she was only paid $100).

Directed by Chi-Hwa Chen with the action choreographed by a very young Jackie Chan, Dance of Death is full of comedic slapstick and outrageous kung fu styles. Rather than the more esteemed Hapikdo (which really only features her in about 8 total minutes of combat!), Wasp & Orchid chose this film based on its relentless action sequences which highlight the range of Angela’s incredible dexterity and skills.

Wasp & Orchid’s Woman Warrior month will commence with the classic Shaw Brothers Studio production Come Drink With Me. The film stars Cheng Pei Pei, perhaps best known to contemporary audiences as the assassin Jade Fox from Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Only twenty years old when the film was made, Pei Pei, originally trained in ballet, quickly became famous as the “Queen of Swords” for her role as the female knight errant Golden Swallow. She would eventually appear in over 20 Shaw Brothers films during her six years with the production company.

This movie also established director King Hu as an innovative master of the wuxia pian/swordfighting genre, who would later go on to make other esteemed classics such as Dragon Gate Inn (1967) & A Touch of Zen (1971). The action sequences were directed by King Hu himself alongside of Yin-Chieh Han (who also worked on the Bruce Lee films Fists of Fury & the Chinese Connection) and Kin-Kwan Poon (who, many years later, would become the stunt coordinator for the Wong Kar Wai films Days of Being Wild & Fallen Angels).

Hello! David Eng, curator of the Wasp & Orchid Martial Arts Choreography Film Series here. I was recently having dim sum with my father, the man who introduced me to martial arts movies before I even knew how to walk, and he excitedly asked me if I had seen this film called “The Raid: Redemption” yet. “It’s absolutely BRUTAL, son!” he exclaimed in between bites of shrimp dumplings. Because my dad has impeccable taste when it comes to extreme action cinema, I immediately went home to watch it.

Now it’s a rare occasion for me these days to actually cringe during fight sequences but this film had me flinching and uttering an empathetic ouch with increasing frequency. Action choreographed by the director Gareth Evans as well as two of the lead actors Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, this movie showcases pencak silat, a unifying term for various ancient Indonesian fighting styles.

So after you’re finished celebrating the resurrection of Christ by stuffing your face with multi-colored marshmallow chicks come on down to Chinatown for a bone-crunching, knife-stabbing, skull-shattering and face-breaking good time!

Directions to Betalevel

1. Find yourself in front of "FULL HOUSE RESTAURANT"
located at 963 N. Hill Street in Chinatown, Los Angeles

2. Locate the narrow alley on the left hand side of Full House.

3. Walk about 20 feet down the alley (away from the street).

4. Stop.

5. Notice dumpster on your right hand side.

6. Take a right and continue down the alley.

7. Exercise caution so as not trip on the wobbly cement blocks underfoot

8. The entrance to Betalevel is located 10 yards down on left side,
behind a red door, down a black staircase.
